Hi Forum members and Celiac's!

I was at a conference for work this past weekend and one of the speakers who was talking about cancers mentioned an interesting fact.  Apparently those of us with autoimmune disease, such as celiac's disease, are at less of a risk for common cancers (breast, lung, prostate, colon).  This is due to the fact that cancer is a problem with our body's inability to regulate the growth of our mutant cancer cells, so then they spread and form tumors.  People with immune disorders tend to attack their own cells and therefore can control the spread of mutant cells better.
Unfortunately the down side is that our immune systems are on high alert and very busy so we are at a higher risk for immune system cell cancers such as lymphomas.  But lymphomas are relatively rare so as long as we eat gluten free and keep on immune system less busy fighting gluten we can lower our risk of lymphomas of the small intestine.

Now keep in mind this is an observation of several pathologists and may be different from what actually happens but it makes sense to me and is good information to know and think about!  Always good to be informed on the risks and relations to our health due to our celiac's disese.

This is actually very good news for all of us. I guess things will balance out itself sometimes, I am truly amazed by this fact and I am overjoyed over it as well. It seems like we can’t eat gluten related food but we are less prone to have cancer. In fact, if we minimize the gluten intake to zero, we wouldn’t have any chance or we have reduced our chances of getting such disease to a minimal point.
